How dust can affect air flow inside the tunnel ventilation house?

Accumulated dust on the plastic shuttle of the ventilation fans will definitely affect the air flow of the tunnel ventilation poultry house. But to what extent?
We have made a study by leaving the plastic shuttle unattended for 36days. Dust accumulated about 3 to 5mm thick on the edges of the shuttles. The shuttles were no long able to open fully as its used to be. The wind speed measured before flock placement was average 2.9 m/s. Whereas after 36days of the unattended condition, the wind speed reading was dropped to 2.2 m/s. The average wind flow was dropped by 25%. To confirm the dust effect on wind speed, we cleaned all the plastic shuttle and measured the reading again. The outcome is, the wind speed immediately back to normal that was 2.9 m/s.
Therefore, in order to have a consistent air flow for your tunnel ventilation house, weekly cleaning of  plastic shuttles must not be omitted!

How pan feeding system works?

Poultry pan feeding system is an automatic feeding equipment which makes feeding work much easier, consistent and less labour dependant.
A pan feeding system is a series of pan feeders that are attached to a galvanised tube with an auger inside driven by a gear motor to convey feed along the tube and distribute to every pan which is attached to it. The length of the galvanised tube is in 10 feet or 12 feet long. One piece of tube can be attached 2 to 4 pan feeders. It can be jointed one after the other up to a maximum  length of 500 feet which we called it a 'line'. The number of feeding line need to be installed is depended on the width of your poultry house.  To complete the line, the begining of line is attached with a hopper to receive feed form the feed silo through feed transportation auger and the end of line is attached with the gear motor. At the end of line, there is a control pan attached before the gear motor to stop the auger from running when feed is reached to the end of line. When the birds eat, the pan automatically refills. The height of the pan can be adjusted to suit the age of the bird by mean of winch.

Monitoring temperature and humidity condition in tunnel ventilation house

To begin the process of monitoring, we recorded down the actual temperature and humidity condition inside and outside of the tunnel ventilation poultry house for future study purposes.
  1. Outside the house, temperature reading was 31.8 degree C and relative humidity reading was 57.8%.
  2. Outside the house at cooling pad area, temperature reading was 31.8 degree C and relative humidity reading was 57.3%.
  3. Inside the house at cooling pad area, cooling pad temperature reading was 22.8 degree C, inside room temperature reading was 26.5 degree C and relative humidity reading was 77.2%.
  4. Inside the house at middle of the house, room temperature reading was 27.8 degree C and relative humidty reading was 77.2%.
  5. Controller temperature shown 27.7 degree C.
  6. Outside roof temperture reading was  35.7 degree C (roof material is PVC 2mm thick).
  7. Inside drop ceiling temperature reading was 29.7 degree C(ceiling material is metal deck).

At the time we measured these readings, the birds were 37 days. 10 Fans were running in full swing. Wind speed was measured average 2.95 m/s. The cooling pad pump was running on 2 mins on-time and 6 mins off-time. The variation of room temperature was between 27.7 to 28.9 degree C. The humidity were controlled very well, as we can see that the related humidity at the cooling pad area and at the middle of the house were almost the same reading, that was RH 77.2%. This showed the litter moisture was very less and so as the ammonia level. We can presume this poultry production was maintained  at an optimum condition during that period of time.

Feeders and Drinkers arrangement for day-old-chick

Shown one example of the Feeders and Drinkers arrangement for day-old-chick in tunnel ventilation farm.

This farm was using chick trays and chick feeders for feeding during brooding period of chick stage. Chick trays and feeders were arranged and spread evenly all over the brooding zone for easy accessibility. The ratio of Chick tray plus feeder to poult was about 1 : 80. Poults were more prefer to eat on the trays after poults placement. Only 2 - 3 hours later, more poults moved toward to chick feeder. This maybe because of feed could be seen easily on the tray then in the feeder. Whereas, poults started drinking from both nipple drinkers and chick drinkers as soon as placed in the house. Although nipple drinking system was being used on the 1st day, auto chick drinkers were also added at a ratio of 1 : 100 poult for about 5 - 7 days.  The room temperature in the brooding zone was about 34 - 35OC. With this optimum environmental condition, poults were basically very active and able to move around and look for food and water after flock placement.

How nipple drinking system works?

The nipple drinking system works like this:

The main water supply comes from the water tank about 3 metre higher than the ground floor. An auto booster pump is needed to maintain proper water pressure at all time. Water pressure is then dropped to approximately  1.5 bar by a main line pressure regulator with a  filter. The water with lowered pressure flows through a meter where the amount of water can be read. The water is then sent through a medicine attachment to add medicine and/ vitamins to the water supply. The filtered water is sent by a plastic pipe to all the pressure regulators of  every individual drinking lines respectively.

The pressure regulator enables to set proper water pressure in the nipple line as for difference bird's grow age requires difference water flow rate. You can adjust the water pressure and it can be checked  with the water level in the viewer tube.  The nipple lines can be flushed whenever is necessary by turning the flush handle from regulate to flush position,  water will then  flushes out through the auto flush kit installed at the end of the lines.

Nipples are fixed into thick square plastic PVC tube. The length is of the nipple pipes is 4.27 meters and supported by either aluminum profile or GI conduit pipe. You can choose how many nipples you want per line depending on your birds per square meter ratio? Nipple lines should be positioned so that the birds travel no more than 1.6 meters to nipples. Birds can trigger water flow by pecking nipple pin side or upwards from any direction. The nipple tubes are connected with a fastening clamp to keep the pipe stable. Nipple with drip cup is always recommended for helping to keep litter dry. Every Nipple line is suspended by a winching system, and is hung at 3 metre intervals.

Nipple drinking systems are good for all types of poultry including layers, parent stock, broilers and free-range birds.

Important tips for evaporative cooling system

1. Cooling pad surface area must match fan capacity at a proper ratio to ensure airspeed at pads is less than 2 mps.

2. Pads with 30°/60° design must install in the right direction. 30° face inside the house and 60° faces outside the house. For pads with 45°/45° design, no installation direction is required.
3. Install wire mesh on the pads to prevent rat or other pest from damaging the pads.

4. Never overrun the pump on pads in high humid weather.

5. Discharge certain amount of recycle water regularly to delute the mineral contents in the water in order not to affect the cooling efficiency.

6. Wash pads with clean water and remove dust after every flock cycle.

What is the best electrical connection for Emergency drop curtain?

Emergency curtain drop system is essential for poultry house when power failure occur. It will automatically drop the side curtain of your tunnel ventilated closed house and it also help to trigger the alarm to alert worker attentions.

Getting the right electrical connection for the emergency drop curtain system is important.  Some of the common alarm systems use in the tunnel ventilation system are :- 1. Power failure alarm. 2. High room temperature alarm. 3. Fan motor trip alarm. We can have the drop curtain electrical connection in such a way that when the power failure alarm and the high room temperature alarm trigger, it will trigger the emergengy curtain drop system at the same time.

Through our experience, it is recommended to have a second set of back up alarm circuit. It should be DC 12voltage battery power supply with charger. The primary alarm circuit is electrical dependent and the second alarm is wind flow dependent. It can be a simple metal plate hinged on the ceiling level with a limit switch attached next to it. As long as there is a wind flowing in the house the metal plate flows away from the limit switch but when there is no wind flow, the metal plate will drops down and touches the limit switch which in turn trigger the alarm and the emegency curtain drop at the same time.
